Peter - A4 graphite pencil commission

I used Becky's services to get a pencil drawing of a family picture for my mum's birthday, and I am so happy with the results! Becky is a fantastic artist and really easy to work with, my picture was delivered on time and to an amazingly high quality. It made for a great present! I will definitely be commissioning her again!

Sara, A4 graphite pencil commission

What a fabulous picture. Bought as a present for my husband and he absolutely loved it. She managed to capture their cheekiness through the picture. It is now a treasured piece as both our girls have sadly passed. Would highly recommend x

Cat, A3 graphite pencil commission

Becky designed a collation piece to celebrate our 10 years of marriage. I provided a selection of photos and she recreated them beautifully in pencil/sketch style. We love it and had it framed and it's a family treasure to see how we have grown together. Huge thanks to Becky for her talent and time. Well worth it.

What is the commission process?

  1. I will email over a document with further information on about what I can offer you, from different packages to print of the commission. I will also email you a form for you to fill out which will give me a rough idea of what you are after. You will need to select an image you wish to be drawn. This image must be your own or you own the copyright to the image or have permission to use the image to be drawn. This is important as I draw hyper realistically so if the images are not your own or you do not have permission to use them for this purpose then this may break copyright law.

  2. We can then discuss a price once we have agreed on an image. Depending on where your image falls within the table below, helps me quote a price. Images without a background and that are smaller, tend to be less expensive so if you are on a budget this is the best option for you. Some options are crossed out at the smaller sizes. This is because it would be very hard for me to fit in all the detail of peoples faces at these sizes and make them look like the reference image.

  3. Once we have decided on a price we can discuss payment and a timescale. Depending on the size and complexity of the drawing it can take anywhere from 5 hours to 50 hours to complete. If you have a specific date you need a drawing done by and let me know I can try and get the drawing done and shipped to you for the specific date if it is feasible to do so.

  4. I ask for 50% of the cost upfront, and then the rest to be paid upon completion and before it is shipped and you receive the artwork. I ask for 50% upfront costs to cover the cost of items needed to create the drawing (paper and art supplies) and unfortunately there are cases where clients have not paid for work once it has been completed. The upfront payment mitigates the risk and ensures we are both happy to go ahead with the project. It also makes it easier for the client as this breaks down the cost which can be paid at two separate times. It is quite a common practice across various creative industries to ensure a fair and secure working relationship.

  5. While I am working on the drawing I will send a few updates on the progress of the drawing so you have some other photos of the drawing being made which will be fun to have.

  6. Once the drawing is complete, I will confirm shipping details, your address and take full payment for the commission. I use royal mail to post commissions and the postage cost is at no extra charge (UK only) to yourself as it is covered in the price of the commission. For international shipping, the cost is added to the commission price. If your commission is over £200 then international shipping is free. I ship tracked 1st class with insurance and will give you the tracking details.

FAQ

How will we discuss the commission?

This is entirely up to whatever you feel most comfortable doing. I mainly discuss commissions via email but I can also offer phone calls or video calls if you prefer.

How do I know my image is a good enough quality?

If you email over your image I will let you know if it is detailed enough to draw from. In most cases, it is best to email over a few images that you like and we can discuss drawing them from there.

When do you take payment for the commission?

I will ask for a 50% deposit once we have discussed the commission and then the other half can be paid once the commission is complete. I will email over a photo of the drawing with a watermark on it to check you are happy with the commission and I will post the commission once the other half of the commission cost has been paid.

How long does postage take?

I try to post the drawing off within 3 business days after you have completed payment for the commission. I use tracked royal mail with insurance. If you live in the UK, it should take around 3 business days to get to you but in general I would allow up to 5 business days for the commission to get to you.

If you live elsewhere in the world, I would allow up to 3 weeks for the parcel to arrive, when I am posting it I will contact you to confirm your address and send information about the rough shipping time royal mail advises. In some cases there can be unforeseen circumstances for the courier which they will update myself and you on.

What if my item is lost in the post?

If you suspect an item has been lost, damaged or stolen please email me to discuss this. If provided with enough proof, I can file a claim with Royal Mail on your behalf and if granted, you will receive a full refund. This is why I will always get insurance on the post in the rare occasion this could happen.

If Royal Mail is unable to cover the costs of the losses then I am unable to offer a refund. It is the buyers responsibility to check restrictions on importing certain goods and their legalities.

Any charges inflicted by customs for the importation and/or duties of certain items are the responsibility of the buyer.

Do you offer returns or refunds on commissions?

A commission is personal and for copyright reasons it cannot be resold, therefore I would not offer refunds on the commission unless I was unable to complete it (timescale, if I fell ill and were unable to complete the drawing for example). I will keep you regularly updated about the progress of the commission so that if there is any part you are unhappy with, I have time to alter bits if needed.

Do you draw in colour or black and white?

Both! I can draw your image in graphite pencil or in coloured pencil. Both cost the same amount. This will be discussed when confirming the commission.

Will the drawing fade?

It should last a long time but I cannot guarantee it will never fade. If you want to preserve the image for longer, I would recommend conservation glass if you frame the image. I do use a pencil fixative on the paper once the drawing is complete but sunlight will still eventually damage the paper and drawing. I can send over a digital copy of the image so you have a version that will never fade.

Will my drawing be used as promotional material?

Only if you say it can be. Once all details of the commission have been discussed, I will send over a form for you to read through and confirm the details of your commission. On the form will be a tick box asking if I can use the image for promotional material on my website and social media accounts. If you say yes and in the future, no longer wish for your image to be used in this way, contact me at beckygraymusic@gmail.com, send me the form you signed so I know it is you and I will happily remove any images/videos of your drawing from my website and social media platforms.

How do you post the drawing?

I use hard backed envelopes to post the drawings in. Once I have fixed them and they have dried, I put them in poly pockets and seal them with tape. I then put them in the hard backed envelopes that have the word fragile written on them. This should stop them getting damaged upon transport.

How long does a drawing take?

Every image is different and has different challenges to them so I can only give you a rough estimate. It can take anywhere from 5 hours to 50+ hours.

Do you include a border on the drawing?

I do not unless requested to. I will draw to the exact dimensions of A5,A4,A3 and will leave a little white around the edge of the image. If you want a border, please request this when we are discussing your commission and what dimensions you would like for the border.

Do you offer for the image to be framed?

I do not currently offer a framing option for my commissions.

How do I get in contact with you if I need to ask any other questions that are not on this FAQ section?
